Westjet had initiated an internal cost-saving idea competition. Several teams from various departments would conceive of new ideas to reduce weight, reduce costs, or monetize elements of the customer experience. All leading to lower fairs that would lead to increased overall revenue.
One team contacted me through a member who I had worked with in the past, and knew I had extensive printing, design, and manufacturing knowledge – specifically with weird and odd projects. They also know I brought previous Aircraft Maintenance and airline knowledge, and it would make conversations easier with greater depth.
During the 2 month competition, I worked with the team to scope out, discuss the feasibility of their ideas from a manufacturing viewpoint, design and quote on the production of concepts, and worked to research and evaluate safety compliance and lifespan of proposed ideas.
